New data relay server. The new alternate server, chocodile, was not operational yesterday, contrary to our report yesterday. It is not yet fully qualified for data relay. Yesterday the SOT Lead was using freefot1. 2. Choice of relay servers. When you boot up a GRETA machine, it defaults to freefot1. To change to another relay, open the GRETA config icon, and select Relay Host to be another choice. Presently, only freefot1 will work. 3. Many problems with GRETA workstation function are believed to be caused by improper shutdown of data relay. When we shut down, we MUST remember to click the correct X box. There are two in the DECrelay window, one in the upper right hand corner which only shuts down the window. The X in the lower right corner actually stops the relay process. Never click the upper right X!! Always click the lower right X. That way, you shut down the relay process properly. Always shut down the process before loggin out. Otherwise, the process keeps on running, and causes system problems. Even a reboot of your workstation will not cure this. 4. When I brought up the apparent unreliability of the SOT Lead GRETA workstation, the GOT staff asserted that the workstation has hardware problems. Apparently it's well known that PCs made by e Machines are not functioning reliably in our environment. I asked for a replacement machine. One is on the way, in a few days. 5. A new version of the GRETA software, 1.1, is being deployed. Its main new feature is the ability to provide output graphics files in formats other than postscript, such as jpeg. This will make for easier email distribution of output.
