Item 1: Second Announcement - 15 Years of Science with Chandra Symposium

Second Announcement
August 2014

15 Years of Science with Chandra Symposium
18-21 November, 2014
Park Plaza, Boston

The meeting will highlight key science results from the past fifteen
years and a panel discussion focusing on key science topics for the
next 10+ years of operation of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Topics
and themes will emphasize high resolution imaging and spectroscopy,
observations and theory, including related data from other
observatories.

The DEADLINE for submitting abstracts for Oral presentations is on
August 15, 2014

Please submit your abstracts online at
http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2014/abstract.html

The Symposium Registration is now open. Please register at
http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2014/

Registration fees are $475 ($250 for students) on or before 15-October
and $600 (Students $350) thereafter. There will be a $100 processing
fee for all cancellations on or before 11-October, with no refunds
thereafter.

The Symposium registration will cover breakfast, lunch and coffee
breaks, as well as the reception on Tuesday evening.

Invited and Contributed Talks and Posters

The Symposium is scheduled to start on Tuesday morning and end on
Friday at lunch time and cover 3 1/2 days of science sessions. There
will be no parallel sessions. The Symposium will include invited talks
plus oral and poster contributions. The number of slots for oral
presentations is limited. However, we will highlight the Posters via
long breaks, with coffee and refreshments in the Poster
rooms. Refreshments and drinks will be provided at a reception with
Poster viewing on Tuesday evening.

There will also be a special session on Thursday afternoon with a
panel discussion on how Chandra might address some of the high
priority science objectives identified in the New Worlds, New Horizons
Decadal study. Chandra has unique X-ray capabilities and with a
projected lifetime of at least another decade can make substantial
progress towards many of the science goals laid out in the
reports. The session will include presentations from the chairs of the
Science Frontiers Panels with discussion and Q&A from the audience.

On Tuesday afternoon there will be a panel discussion by the STS-93
astronauts, providing their historical reminiscences of
AXAF/Chandra. Paul Hertz, Director of the Astrophysics Division of
NASA, is expected to attend and speak on some aspect of astrophysics
and x-ray astronomy.

The confirmed invited speakers are as follows:
Antara Basu-Zych (NASA GSFC)
Bradford Benson (University of Chicago)
Francesca Civano (Yale University)
Judith Croston (University of Southampton, England)
Giuseppina Fabbiano (CfA)
Daryl Haggard (Amherst College)
Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo (Stanford University/Universite de Montreal)
David Huenemoerder (MIT)
Victoria Kaspi (McGill University)
Rodolfo Montez (Vanderbilt University)
Giuseppina Micela (INAF-Palermo)
Jon Miller (University of Michigan)
Jacco Vink (University of Amsterdam)

Item 2: Joint Chandra Calibration/CIAO Workshop

A one day Chandra Calibration and CIAO workshop will be held on
Monday, 17 November 2014, at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics, Cambridge, MA.

The workshop is on the day before the start of the 15 Years of Science
with Chandra Symposium being held in downtown Boston.

The workshop will focus on getting the most out of Chandra data, with
discussions of CIAO capabilities and the impact of calibration on
cutting edge science. About half of the day will be spent on hands-on
sessions, with CXC staff available to answer individual questions and
assist with data analysis.

The workshop - limited to 30 participants - is mainly aimed at
students and postdocs new to Chandra data, who will be given
precedence, but participation is encouraged for anyone interested.

For more details check out the Chandra Calibration/CIAO Workshop
website (http://cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/ciao4.6/workshop/nov14/index.html)
or send email to ccc@cfa.harvard.edu

Item 3: CAVEAT Page added to CalDB Web Page

Item #: HRC-S QEU 2014, 1999 CAVEAT added to CalDB Web Page

We have discovered two errors in the CalDB Index file for the HRC-S
QEU time-dependent datasets which are labeled N0006. The page is
posted at

http://cxc.harvard.edu/caldb4/caveats/HRC-S_QEU_2014_caveat.html

The errors affect all 2014 Obs_IDs involving the HRC-S, as well as all
1999 HRC-S observations. The web page lists all of the non-Calibration
observations that are affected. The wrong QEU file is selected,
producing a ~5-7% error in the net QE for HRC-S, which translates
directly to the calculated grating ARFs.

More details and a temporary workaround are given for affected
observations on the above web page. A fix for both issues will be
released with the next CalDB upgrade, currently scheduled for mid
August 2014.
