How to access the Chandra Source Catalog Release 2.0

Release 2.0 of the Chandra Source Catalog contains both tabular data - such as source name, position, and photometric properties, as well as related information linking a master source to the stack and obervation properties - as well as associated data products, including source spectra, images, exposure maps, and draws files from the MCMC error analysis stages.

The following means of access are available:

CSCview and ADQL access to CSC 2.0

While all sources have undergone standard quality assurance evaluations, some may be deleted or have their properties revised as a result of further quality-assurance analyses step prior to the official CSC 2.0 release.

The processing status page is regularly updated to indicate how many sources have been processed and added to the database. The pre-release and pd2 tables can be used to supplement the data returned by the methods described below.

The CSCview application

The main interface to CSC 2.0 is the CSCview application. This is a Java program which allows you to search previous releases of the catalog (namely 1.0 and 1.1), along with the current data from CSC 2.0 (referred to as the Current Database). The CXCView help page provides help on how to use this application.

Please ensure you have the latest version of CSCview, as previous versions are not able to search data from CSC 2.0.

Using ADQL

The ADQL interface can be used to query the catalog, but it does not provide access to the ancillary data products, such as spectral data files. Access is via a HTTP query, as described on the help page for the command-line interface.

VO cone search

The VO cone-search service can be used to query versions 1.1 and 1.0 of the CSC.

This service will be updated to support CSC 2.0 with the full release of the catalog.

CIAO scripts

The CIAO contributed-script package contains the search_csc and obsid_search_csc tools for searching version 1.1 of the CSC.

These scripts have not yet been updated to support CSC 2.0.
