Title: Probing the disc-wind-jet connection in black hole transients

PI Name: Maria Trigo

We propose 6 observations of a high inclination black hole (BH) low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) at different stages of its outburst. We will investigate the presence of narrow X-ray absorption/emission features in the spectra, which are a signature of a disc wind, and their relation to the accreting regime. Such features, identified with ions like Fe XXV and Fe XXVI, have been observed in a number of LMXBs and give us information about the mass outflow rate and the launching mechanism of the wind. With simultaneous radio observations we will probe the relationship between jet power and wind properties and how the radio flux density correlates with the X-ray flux in different accretion regimes. We will also investigate the broadening mechanism of the Fe~K emission line.

Title: Bright X-ray counterparts of galactic 3FGL sources

PI Name: Jeremy Hare

We propose to follow-up the most interesting X-ray sources discovered during the survey of unidentified Fermi sources that we carried out with Swift. The survey targeted a sub-sample of Fermi sources that we expect to be dominated by pulsars along with HMXBs, PWNe, and SNRs. In the proposed deeper XMM-Newton observations we aim to constrain the spectrum of the 3 brightest sources, as well as search for variabilities, periodicities, and extended emission. Identifying the nature of these sources will allow us to better understand the population of galactic particle accelerators, in particular, pulsars, PWNe, and HMXBs detected in both gamma-rays and X-rays. We will also be able to search for much fainter X-ray sources.

Title: The timing properties of the transient magnetar XTE J1810-197 during quiescence

PI Name: Fabio Pintore

This program is aimed at obtaining a phase-coherent timing solution for the period evolution of the transient magnetar XTE J1810-187 during its quiescent state. We aim at study the spin evolution during quiescence of the source XTE J1810-197, which is the prototype of the transient magnetars, by means of a phase-connected timing analysis based on joint XMM-Newton+Chandra observations. After a long outburst, XTE J1810-197 returned to a quiescent state where the pulsation is still detectable, unlike other transient magnetars which are not detected during quiescence. In particular, here we request 8 XMM-newton observation with 10ks exposure and one Chandra observation with 20ks exposure, that will give us information on the source spin-down evolution and on its spectral properties during quiescence.
