Proposal Title: THE ROTATION X-RAY ACTIVITY CONNECTION IN THE ORION PRE-MAIN-SEQUENCE POPULATION

PI Name: MARY BARSONY

We propose to combine the rich database of recently determined rotation al periods in Orion with the extensive archival Chandra observations of Orion t o: 1) establish, for the first time, the X-ray activity-rotation relationship i n a pre-main-sequence cluster (L$_x$/L$_{bol}$ vs. P$_{rot}$) as a function of mass; and 2) search for periodic X-ray emission in ultra-fast rotators. This st udy will leverage existing Chandra observations to help answer fundamental outs tanding questions about the role of magnetic fields in the angular momentum evo lution of young stellar objects.

Subject Category: WD BINARIES AND CV

Proposal Title: CHANDRA GALACTIC PLANE SURVEY (CHAMPLANE): ARCHIVAL ANALYSIS

PI Name: JONATHAN GRINDLAY

We have initiated a Chandra galactic plane survey (ChaMPlane) in which serendipitous sources detected in deep (>30ksec) galactic (b < 10deg) ACIS or H RC fields are detected and optically identified with a deep imaging (Halpha vs. R; V and I) and spectroscopic followup program to identify emission line objec ts. This survey will constrain the poorly known space densities of cataclysmic variables and low/high mass x-ray binaries (both black hole and neutron star pr imaries) in the Galaxy, as well as provide the deepest stellar coronal source x -ray survey yet conducted. Support is requested for archival Chandra data analy sis, implementation of the ChaMPlane x-ray processing pipeline, optical observa tions and analysis, and establishment of the x-ray and optical database systems.

Subject Category: BH AND NS BINARIES

Proposal Title: ARCHIVAL PROPOSAL: MEASURING NEUTRON STAR RADII IN GLOBULAR CLUSTERS

PI Name: ROBERT RUTLEDGE

Constraining the equation of state of neutron stars (NSs) has long been a goal of X-ray astronomy. Modelling emission from NS atmospheres has placed p art of this goal within reach: the accurate measurement of NS radii. The simpli city of Hydrogen (H) atmospheres for NSs in binary systems permits accurate rad ius measurements from the transiently accreting neutron stars in quiescence (qN Ss). The major remaining uncertainties are the distance and column density to t he object; this is overcome when the NSs are in globular clusters (GCs). With t he proposed observations, we will analyse low-luminosity X-ray sources in GCs, to distinguish between the cataclysmic variable, stellar coronal, millisecond p ulsar and qNS populations, and to measure the neutron star radii.

Subject Category: BH AND NS BINARIES

Proposal Title: CHANDRA GRATING SPECTROSCOPY OF X-RAY BINARIES

PI Name: SAEQA VRTILEK

We propose to undertake a uniform analysis of X-ray binaries (XRBs) obs erved with the Chandra HETGS. Owing to their proximity and brightness, XRBs pro vide otherwise unobtainable insight into the accretion process. We will: genera te an atlas of spectra for use in comparative studies of different classes of X RBs and for correlation with catalogs in other wavelengths; use emission and re combination line diagnostics to determine temperatures, densities, elemental ab undances, and ionization structure; and test and improve models of X-ray line e mission developed by us over the past decade. Insights gained from this work wi ll be applicable also to irradiated, accreting plasmas which are present in reg ions of star formation, interacting main-sequence binaries, AGNs, and quasars.

Subject Category: SN, SNR AND ISOLATED NS

Proposal Title: AN ATLAS OF CHANDRA SUPERNOVA REMNANTS

PI Name: FREDERICK SEWARD

We propose to start a catalog of Chandra supernova remnant observations containing images and spectra. We will include images in selected spectral ban ds and spectra observed from selected parts of the remnants. Tables will give c ount rates, fluxes, and luminosities. The intent is to present data useful in p roposal preparation as well as in studies of properties of remnants as a class of objects. This proposal is to support the incorporation of radio data in the catalog and the development of a website.

Subject Category: ACTIVE GALAXIES AND QUASARS

Proposal Title: GALAXIES WITH SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES: A COMPLETE PICTURE FROM THE CHANDRA ARCHIVE

PI Name: LAURA FERRARESE

This proposal targets deep (30-40ks) ACIS archival images of five nearb y elliptical galaxies for which the mass of the central black hole is known wit h high accuracy. Using the ACIS images we will: 1) measure the total gravitatio nal mass of each galaxy; 2) use the temperature and density of the hot ISM at t he accretion radius to constrain the accretion rate onto the central BH; 3) exp lore the viability of cooling flows in feeding the central engine; 4) constrain the SED of the nuclear X-ray source. The information will allow us to 1) inves tigate the fundamental parameters that control the formation and evolution of t he BHs and their host galaxies; and 2) begin to understand the origin of the wi de range in nuclear luminosities observed even among galaxies with BHs of simil ar masses.

Subject Category: CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES

Proposal Title: A SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF COOLING FLOWS AND RADIO GALAXIES USING THE CHANDR A ARCHIVE

PI Name: BRIAN MCNAMARA

Using archival Chandra imaging, ground based U, R, I, and VLA radio ima ging for an initial sample of 30 cluster cores, we will reevaluate the proposit ion that large quantities of intracluster gas are cooling and accreting onto gi ant central cluster galaxies (CDGs) and fueling star formation. In addition, we will study in detail the role of radio sources on the dynamics of the hot gas in clusters, and in triggering star formation in their host CDGs. Measurements of the physical state of the keV gas will be made on the same arcsecond spatial scales as the star formation regions, permitting the cooling rates and star fo rmation rates to be directly compared and perhaps reconciled. We will determine whether radio sources are heating the gas surrounding them and reducing the co oling rates.

Subject Category: EXTRAGALACTIC DIFFUSE EMISSION AND SURVEYS

Proposal Title: DERIVING THE NATURE OF SUPER-EDDINGTON SOURCES FROM THE CHANDRA ARCHIVE OF GALAXIES

PI Name: DOUGLAS SWARTZ

We will apply uniform and systematic analysis methods to a sample of 47 archival ACIS images of galaxies in order to determine the nature of non-nucle ar super-Eddington sources. Our study will probe the x-ray properties of super- Eddington sources and compare them to their less-luminous counterparts; establi sh the common correspondence between super-Eddington sources and their local en vironments through mapping of Chandra source locations onto high-resolution ima ges taken at other wavelengths and through followup ground-based observations; and identify correlations between super-Eddington sources and galaxy morphologi cal type, mass, gas content, and dynamic state.

Subject Category: EXTRAGALACTIC DIFFUSE EMISSION AND SURVEYS

Proposal Title: THE CHANDRA MULTI-WAVELENGTH PROJECT (CHAMP): A SERENDIPITOUS X-RAY SURVEY WITH CHANDRA ARCHIVAL DATA

PI Name: BELINDA WILKES

We are performing a serendipitous X-ray survey (ChaMP) of ~14 sq deg of sky to flux limits intermediate between pre-Chandra and small area Chandra dee p surveys. We predict ~4000 sources, at least 3000 of which are active galaxies . Optical imaging is in progress using SDSS g',r',i' filters to flux limits mat ched to the X-ray data. ChaMP: 1) requires no new X-ray observations 2) provide s a large, uniform, multi-wavelength, public database allowing the community to address a wide variety of scientific questions 3) covers sufficient area to fi nd sources at brighter flux levels not well-sampled by Chandra deep surveys We request continued funding to extend our specialized X-ray analysis pipeline, to produce and publicly release source lists and to support our ground-based obse rving program.
