Item 1.  Chandra's First Decade of Discovery
============================================

This will be the fifth symposium in a series highlighting unique imaging and 
spectroscopic results from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This event will 
celebrate key science results from the first ten years of operation of the 
Chandra X-ray Observatory.  The focus will be on results which have had the 
largest impact on Astrophysics, including: The Cosmic Evolution of AGN, AGN 
outflows, evolutionary processes in clusters of galaxies, source populations 
and diffuse emission from normal galaxies, physical processes at the Galactic 
center,  high spatial and spectral studies of neutron star physics, supernova 
remnants and star forming regions. We will also cover recent results from the 
XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift, INTEGRAL, Fermi, RXTE and AGILE missions, as well as 
related theoretical results.

The DEADLINE for submitting abstracts to be considered for an oral 
presentation is 10-July. Please submit your abstract on-line at

(the deadline for abstracts for poster presentations is 21 August 2009).

** TRAVEL AND LODGING **UPDATED**

A block of rooms has been reserved for attendees of Chandra's First Decade of 
Discovery and of the Chandra Calibration Review at the Seaport Hotel, which 
is adjacent to the World Trade Center where the meetings will be held. Rooms 
can be reserved through the website at

** REGISTRATION

Registration is open at
http://cxc.harvard.edu/symposium_2009/registration.html. Registration fees are 
$475 ($300 for students, $225 for guests) on or before 4-September and $600 
thereafter. There will be a $100 processing fee for all cancellations on or 
before 21-August, with no refunds thereafter.

General and student registration includes two receptions, four breakfasts, 
three lunches, and two breaks per day, plus a lunchtime cruise aboard the 
Spirit of Boston. A guest registration fee includes both receptions, all 
breakfasts and lunches, and one cruise ticket; attendance at the talks and 
the breaks is not included.

** CHANDRA CALIBRATION REVIEW

The Chandra Calibration Review will occur 21-September,  the day before 
Chandra's First Decade of Discovery, also at the Seaport Boston. The purpose 
of the Calibration Review is to share the Chandra calibration teams' 
knowledge of the detectors and mirrors with the community, while encouraging 
participation and feedback in the process of calibrating the Observatory. 
While there is no registration fee for this review, attendees must register.

** INVITED AND CONTRIBUTED TALKS AND POSTERS

The Symposium will include invited talks plus oral and poster contributions. 
The number of slots for oral presentations is limited. However, we will 
highlight the Posters via long breaks, with coffee and refreshments in the 
Poster rooms.  Also, there will be an opening reception Monday evening, and a 
Poster viewing session Tuesday evening, both with food and drinks.

Item 3.  ACIS Operations Position
==================================


The CXC would like to call the attention of interested candidates to the
availability of a position with the ACIS Operations Team within the
Operations Science Support team of the CXC.  The ACIS Operations Team
is responsible for the health & safety of the ACIS instrument, generation
of command loads for the instrument, verification of the correct instrument
configuration for observations, and monitoring of the science performance
of the instrument.  Beyond a strong interest in hands-on participation in
the operation of a major space observatory, qualifications include a
solid background in physics, math, astronomy, and computing.  Positions
of this kind have often been an excellent learning opportunity for
recent holders of bachelor's or master's degrees looking for several years'
experience before continuing in  graduate school, but have also been
filled by persons with advanced degrees.  If interested, please respond to the
