From Chandra X-ray Observatory Report 01/27/12 ------------------------------------------------ During the last week the observing schedule was interrupted by a high-radiation event that activated the science instrument safing sequence (SCS 107) and stopped observing at 01:00am EST on Jan 23. This was the first radiation event since the observatory's response to high radiation was modified. All spacecraft actions were nominal. A real-time procedure was executed on Jan 23 to disable SCS-29, which was enabled during the safing sequence. Observations of NGC3115 and HD 107148 were impacted and will be rescheduled. A real-time procedure was executed on Jan 25 to verify that the radiation environment as observed by the HRC anticoincidence shield had decreased to an acceptable level and a replanned schedule for resuming science observations was uplinked with 192.1ks of science loss. From Jan 23 2012 Telecom Summary --------------------------------- OPS acquired early comm and discovered SCS-107 had executed (as anticipated). Time of execution 2012:023:06:00:38z; this was prior to rad-zone entry. HRC saw rapidly rising rates at the end of the 04:00-05:00 comm. SCS-107 ran nominally. SSR dump in progress. There is a clean-up action of disabling SCS-29 via pre-approved CAP. GOES proton rates are still high and have not begun to trend downward, making the projection of a science resumption time difficult. A follow-up telecon will be held at 5:00pm EST on 111159# to review the trends in radiation and plans for science resumption. Mission planning can move forward with preparations for science resumption and will use and initial target of the 024:13:00-14:00z pass for uplink. This plan would have a load-review this evening which can be assessed at the 5:00pm telecon. Scheduling for a later resumption is reasonably straight-forward. A CAP to check the HRC antico-shield rate must be executed prior to uplinking the resumption schedule. If the high-energy proton environment is good for science resumption but the low-energy proton environment is not then ACIS will look to perform an extended ECS-measurement for CTI calibration. From SOT Shift Report 01/20/12 ------------------------------ A full halo CME was observed after a M3.2 LDE in region 11402. The CME is predicted to reach Earth on January 21 at 22:30 UT (+/- 7 hrs). Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low through the period (20 - 22 January) with a chance for M-class activity from Regions 1401 and 1402. From SOT Shift Report 01/23/12 ------------------------------ Jan. 23rd around 0359 UT, big sunspot 1402 erupted, producing a long-duration M9-class solar flare. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low during the period (23 - 25 January) with a chance for an isolated M-class flare from Region 1401 or Region 1402.
