Please check the website at http://cxc.harvard.edu/cdo/xrb12 for information. A registration webpage and abstract submission deadlines will be available there by January 2012. MEETING ABSTRACT In 1962, Scorpius X-1 became the first X-ray source discovered outside the Solar System. In the 50 years since, X-ray binaries have proven to be important for studies of fundamental physical processes such as mass accretion and jet formation. Contemporary X-ray satellites provide detailed spectroscopic studies of individual Galactic black hole and neutron star binaries, as well as population studies of low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters, high-mass X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in starburst galaxies. This meeting will celebrate the startling discovery of Scorpius X-1, highlight the latest results in our understanding of the formation of black holes, neutron stars and X-ray binaries, as well as the use of X-ray binaries for testing the laws of physics in the extreme environment close to black holes and neutron stars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Item 2: CIAO: Future Platform Support ====================================================================== Dear CIAO users, This is a heads-up email to inform you that the next CIAO release (CIAO 4.4 currently scheduled for December 2011) will *NOT INCLUDE SOLARIS BINARIES* marking the end of our support for the following platform: Solaris 10 (SunOS 5.10) We are also evaluating discontinuing support for Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) on the same time frame to concentrate our efforts on the newest Mac OS releases. Please let us know via Helpdesk if Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) is still your only option for your CIAO data analysis. We hope that informing you in advance will help you in planning a possible operating system change or hardware purchase. For your information we are also working on supporting CIAO for the new MACOSX 10.7 (Lion) operating system which Apple released in July 2011. The full list of platforms currently planned for CIAO4.4 is therefore: Linux 32 bit and 64 bit: supporting most platforms including CentOS, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu Mac OS 32 bit and 64 bits: 10.5 (Leopard) Intel (*possibly*), 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion) Antonella Fruscione for the CIAO development team |
