There are two large hotels in Cambridge, easily accessible from the observatory by the Red Line (~20 minutes during rush hour):

Information on other accommodations (hotels and many B&Bs) and restaurants in the Boston area can be found at the SAO Travel hotel list and "Where We Are" (see "Restaurants and Accommodations" at the bottom of the page).

Travel and accommodation arrangements are the responsibility of the participants. See Maps and Directions to the CfA for driving directions.

Parking & Public Transporatation

Is it almost impossible to park your car within and around the CfA. There is some very limited free unrestricted parking along Huron Avenue (one block from the CfA), however we strongly suggest that you use public transportation to reach the CfA. If you absolutely need a parking space please let us know as soon as possible (e-mail cxchelp@head.cfa.harvard.edu).

Train ("T") and bus Schedules and Maps can be found on the MBTA website. Subway fares are $2.00; bus fares are $1.50.

To get to the CfA by public transportation:

  • Walking:
Take the Red Line to Harvard Square. Walk left toward the main part of the station as you exit the train. Go through the turnstiles and up the stairs/escalators at the left to leave the station. Cross Massachusetts Ave (the Harvard Coop will be directly in front of you) and walk to the right. Turn left onto Garden St (there is a cemetary on the corner). After a few blocks, bear left onto Concord Ave where the road forks. When you see St. Peters School on the left, the stairs to the Observatory are across the street on your right. The walk from the T station takes about 15 minutes.

  • By Bus:
Take the Red Line to Harvard Square. Walk left toward the main part of the station as you exit the train. Go through the turnstiles and bear right across the station to the ramps leading to the bus tunnel; take the upper ramp. Once through the doors, go to the berths to your left. Bus numbers 72, 74, 75, 78 (NOT 77) will take you to the Observatory. (The 72 bus stops further down the platform, near the exit stairs.) Ask the driver to let you off by St. Peters School; the Observatory is just up the stairs in the hill (on the same side of the street as the bus stop).

During rush hour you should have a wait of no longer then 10-15 minutes for one of these buses.

Workshop location

The workshop will be held in Pratt auditorium, marked as "P" in the 60 Garden Street Building Diagram; see "Where We Are" for other maps.
