Title: Unmasking the central engine in a Cow-like transient with XMM, VLT, HST and CXO
PI Name: Ashley Chrimes
Abstract: Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs, or Cow-like transients, after the prototypical AT2018cow) are characterised by luminous multi-wavelength emission, blue optical colours and rapid evolution that is inconsistent with Ni56-powered supernovae (SNe). Although the number of LFBOTs is growing thanks to high-cadence, deep and wide-field surveys, detailed studies of individual events are lacking. These are necessary to determine the central engine and progenitor. We propose a joint programme, utilising XMM-Newton, the Very Large Telescope (VLT), Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to firmly identify a single, low redshift LFBOT and to determine the nature of its central engine.

Title: The Energetics of the Oxygen Rich Supernova Remnant G292.0+1.8
PI Name: Daniel Patnaude
Abstract: The composition and dynamics of supernova remnants inform us on the explosion mechanism of the supernova and the evolution of the progenitor. The Galactic remnant G292.0+1.8 is an evolved remnant rich in emission from shocked ejecta and circumstellar material. It is also optically bright in [OIII] emission. Here we propose for a 500ks observation of G292. We will perform Doppler tomography on the ejecta in order to measure their 3D dynamics. Additionally, we request 100ks of Chandra ACIS-I time to measure the expansion of the forward shock and motion of the pulsar, and 8 orbits of HST/ACS time to measure the transverse motion of the bright optical knots. Our proposed program will be complemented by a ground based spectroscopic survey and approved XRISM observations.

Title: Studying a low metallicity starburst through X-ray looking glass
PI Name: Lidia Oskinova
Abstract: We propose joint XMM-Newton (50 ks) and Chandra (100 ks) program to quantify stellar feedback in the most energetic local low-metallcity starburst II Zw 40 which contains an exceptionally massive young superstar cluster. The joint observations will measure the energetics of hot galactic corona surrounding the galaxy, determine temperature of the huge bubble around the supercluster, and provide a census of accreting neutron stars and black holes. The new data will improve the stellar feedback models in the important but unexplored parameter space, and elevate our understanding of low metallicity starbursts to a new level.
