Chandra/CIAO Workshop. UMass Lowell, 19-23 May 2025

Overview

Members of the Chandra X-ray Center, CfA and MIT, will join the staff at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a week long workshop focused on Chandra data analysis. The workshop will include presentations, science talks, and ample time for hands-on learning.

Pre-Workshop Prepartion

To get the most out of the workshop, we have put together some pre-workshop information. We request that students please be sure to have CIAO installed and/or have a SciServer account created before the workshop begins.

Workbook

A key element of the Chandra/CIAO workshop time reserved for Hands On data analysis. Some students may come to the workshop with specific datasets or specific analysis questions. However, for new Chandra/CIAO users we have created a Workbook with some basic exercises to complement the talks.

In addition to the PDF, we also have provided the workbook in the form of a Jupyter notebook. There are two versions: an emptied notebook without (most) of the exercise questions answered, and a completed notebook. To run these notebooks users will need to install the bash_kernel before starting jupyter notebook/lab using the commands below

pip install bash_kernel
python -m bash_kernel.install --sys-prefix

Tip: Students may want to skip and circle back around to the "Extra Credit" sections unless they are especially interested in a specific topic.

Accommodations

Final arrangements are in progress, but we anticipate that accommodations and meals will be provided at little to no cost for all participants.
