CIAO Workshops
The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) offers a series of workshops aimed at helping users to work with the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations (CIAO) software.

Members of the Chandra X-ray Center, CfA and MIT, joined the staff at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a week long workshop focused on Chandra data analysis. The workshop included presentations, science talks, and ample time for hands-on learning.
The workshop toook place on the UMass Lowell campus. UMass Lowell is located in historic mill city of Lowell, Mass., 45-minutes north of Boston, at the intersections of Routes 495, 93 and 3. Food, travel, registration, and accommodations were provided through generous grants from the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and the Heising-Simons Foundation.
Supplementary Material
Students and new CIAO users may find the following material useful:
-
The CIAO Exercise Workbook is a collection of exercises designed to acquaint users with CIAO syntax and concepts.
-
Users looking to hone their CIAO skills could attempt some of the projects from one of the recent X-ray schools during the hands-on sessions.
-
Users can also search through the Quick Start Guide to get started on their specific analysis path as quickly as possible.
Information on other past CIAO workshops—which includes electronic copies of all the handouts and presentations—may be found in the Previous Workshops webpages. Material from previous Cal workshops can be found on the Chandra Calibration Review. Lecture materials from prior X-ray astronomy schools emphasize the fundamentals of the discipline rather than any particular mission or software tools.
